Cyndi Lauper Friends Home for the Holidays Tickets

For nearly a decade singer-songwriter, activist and pop music icon Cyndi Lauper has hosted her annual Home for the Holidays Benefit Concert in New York City. Throughout those years, Lauper has gathered her talented friends and raised money for her True Colors United nonprofit, which funds programs that work to end homelessness among the LGBTQ youth.

For the first time, the Home for the Holidays Benefit Concert is coming to the West Coast and is happening on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at The Novo at L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles. She has put together quite the eclectic mix of artists for the evening, which she said will play out loosely throughout the evening with each artist doing something special and, Lauper added, she may join them for duets as well.

The roster of talent for the 9th annual benefit concert includes pop star Kesha, shock rocker Marilyn Manson, Broadway performer Billy Porter, Grammy Award-winning alternative country star Brandi Carlile, Go-Go's frontwoman and LGBTQ advocate Belinda Carlisle, blues legend Charlie Musselwhite, punk rock icon Henry Rollins, Offspring singer Dexter Holland, Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell with his wife and singer Etty Lau Farrell, multi-instrumentalist and singer-song-writer K.Flay, indie pop star King Princess, songwriter Justin Tranter, Emilio and Gloria Estefan's singer-songwriter daughter Emily Estefan, producer Shawn Wasabi and comedians Carol Leifer, Lily Tomlin, Gina Yashere and Margaret Cho. The event will be hosted by True Colors United board member and "Queer Eye" star Carson Kressley.

"I'll do whatever anyone wants me to do," Lauper said during a recent phone interview. "I'll sing with them, play the background singer, I'll be whatever they need or I won't be there at all if that's what they want. I'm just glad everyone shows up and there will be a lot of collabs and it's always a lot of fun. I enjoy it because it's so diverse."

Much like Stevie Wonder's annual House Full of Toys Benefit — which usually takes place at Microsoft Theater or Staples Center, but sadly isn't happening this year — Lauper has brought out some incredible talent to perform with throughout the years. Previous supporters have included Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Kacey Musgraves, RuPaul, Tegan and Sara and Billie Eilish. The artists also donate items and experiences such as special meet-and-greets for auction, which all adds to the fundraising. All of the proceeds from the evening go directly to True Colors United.

"I always felt like if you're going to do a charity, let's do something that can actually be fixed," she explained. "Right now, as we speak, there are young people who are experiencing homelessness in the number of 4.2 million from the ages of 12 to 24. Up to 40 percent of those people are LGBTQ and they're only on the streets because they're LGBTQ. For us, this seems like a fixable thing. We can do this. There are so many innovative programs that True Colors United has worked with and is continuing to work with so we can advocate for these young people and come up with solutions that aren't so after the fact, but even preventative and that starts with education. At True Colors United we're doing a lot and people can visit our website and they might be inspired to get involved."

Lauper has worked directly with the non-profit Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and alongside advocates like Cathy Nelson, Gregory  Lewis and Judy Shepard, the mother of Matthew Shepard, a college student who was murdered in 1998 in one of the most high-profile hate crimes against LGBTQ people. She said she was inspired by their passion, but also their clear vision on what could be done.

"I had already kind of given up," she said. "I thought, you know, politicians only care about themselves. They don't care about what goes on with regular people, they make laws and things that just kind of cushion their own pockets and that couldn't be more clear. But when we stated working with the HRC and seeing the ways to get involved, we realized we could bring people together for a common cause and help the situation. If we can get that 40 percent of young people experiencing homelessness back into the system where they become productive, happy, tax-paying and contributing to our community and economy, then we make a stronger country. That's how I look at it."

There will be plenty of information about True Colors United and the ways music fans can contribute available during the concert at The Novo. Lauper said she's always just amazed by who shows up to her event. Moving it to the west coast, she thought she'd be able to nab a few more famous faces and she said she's very appreciative of every artist lending their time and talent to the show.

"I just think it's going to be fun and funny," she said. "Carson Kressley is our host and he's a nut. Margaret Cho is so funny and Billy Porter, I can't wait to see what he does. Lily Tomlin is coming and Carol Leifer, who has been writing for Jane Lynch and I for a new Netflix series, are both so funny. Oh, and Henry Rollins. Are you kidding me? I hope he let's me sing a song with him. I like that we're all different and we're all going to be together and I always try to make sure there's comedy at these shows because I think laughter is music, too. The music of laughter is very powerful."
